007: Titles and runner-up finishes
A look at Carolina's NCAA team titles and runner-up finishes.
North Carolina has won 48 NCAA team Championships. 35 of those 48 titles are across women’s sports, including 31 of the 35 from two sports. Women’s soccer (21) and Field Hockey (10) lead the way in team titles.
This fall, Field Hockey captured its 10th team title and women’s soccer came up short in winning its 22nd title. The two sports have only won the title in the same season three times (1996, 1997, and 2009).
How often has Carolina finished second or just shy of a team title?
31 runner-up or second place finishes.
Women’s soccer
An astounding 21 NCAA team titles to six second place finishes.
Carolina has played for the title in three of the last five seasons. A 3-2 overtime loss with a suspect goal surrendered with 16 seconds left in regulation this season and a 5-4 decision in penalty kicks in 2019 are both heart-breaking losses.
Field Hockey
10 team titles and 11 runner-up finishes. Absolute dominance over past five seasons winning four titles (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022). Hard to remember the program lost five consecutive title games not too long ago (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016).
Men’s basketball
Six titles and six second place finishes. Won four straight title game appearances (1982, 1993, 2005, 2009) after losing three straight (1968, 1977, 1981).
Men’s Lacrosse
Five championships and one runner-up finish. A 13-12 decision to Syracuse in 1993 is the program’s only title game loss. The 2016 team was unseeded in the NCAA Tournament and beat Maryland 14-13 in overtime.
Women’s Lacrosse
Three team titles and two second place finishes. Three of those five title games decided by one goal, including the 2013 championship that ended in a 13-12 win in three overtimes.
Men’s Soccer
Two team titles. A 1-0 loss to Maryland in the 2008 title game.
The 2001 team needed overtime in three of its five tournament games, including four overtimes to beat Stanford 3-2 in the national semifinal.
Baseball
Back-to-back appearances in the College World Series Championship series and no titles. *shakes fist at Darwin Barney*
A 1-0 lead in the championship series in 2006 ended in heartbreak with a 3-2 loss after committing four errors.
Women’s Basketball
Only one title game appearance and one title. A dramatic championship win in 1994 as Charlotte Smith made a three-point shot at the buzzer.
Women’s Tennis
Only one team NCAA title game appearance and four semi-final appearances. A 4-3 loss to UCLA in 2014 was the closest the program got to winning a team NCAA title.
The program has won six Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) indoor team titles, including three in a row.
Men’s Tennis
One NCAA team runner-up finish in 2017, a 4-2 loss to Virginia after posting a 29-5 record on this season. In 2016, the men’s program won the ITA indoor team championship.
