Alabama beat Carolina 103-101 this past Sunday. It took four overtimes or 60 minutes.
It was the second four-overtime game in Carolina history. The Heels beat Tulane, 113-106 in four overtimes in 1976.
The last three overtime game was a 119-113 loss to Wake Forest in 2003. The first ACC game with Roy Williams as the head coach.
One player, Jawad Williams, played at least 50 minutes in that three overtime game loss. Against Alabama, Carolina had three players log at least 50 minutes or more.
Below are the substitution patterns that attempt to plot each Carolina playerβs time on the court.
π¨A couple caveats π¨
The play-by-play data is messy. A human enters the stats with little time to correct mistakes, especially, when itβs a neutral site tournament game in November. There are errors, and I tried to manually correct it with a rewatch of the game. Confidence of the data is not high.
Hidden time on the court is a real thing. For example, with eight seconds left in the fourth overtime, both Seth Trimble and Justin McKoy entered the game as defensive substitutes. The problem is the Alabama turned the ball over with almost no time falling off the clock.
Notes on the playing time for each player
Caleb Love
Played a game-high 57 minutes, which is one shy of the Carolina record of 58 minutes held by Phil Ford in that 1976 four-overtime game. Love also attempted 36 shots(!), the fourth most in a single game in Carolina history. The 36 shots are only behind Lennie Rosenbluth (43), Billy Cunningham (39), and again Rosenbluth (37).
Leaky Black
Played 53 minutes despite rolling an ankle during the game. Black made a three-point shot to give Carolina a 101-100 lead in the fourth overtime.
RJ Davis
Played 50 minutes while attempting 24 shots and scoring 19 points. Davis played every minute of each overtime.
Puff Johnson
Played 48 minutes. Johnsonβs previous career-high in minutes was 29, which was last season against NC State. Johnson played only 10 minutes in the first half and 38 of a possible 40 minutes the rest of the way.
Armando Bacot
Played 39 minutes and registered his 52nd career double-double (20 points and 10 rebounds). An injury late kept him out the majority of the final two overtimes.
Pete Nance
Played 25 minutes while picking up his fourth foul with ~18 minutes left in regulation. Nance played only three minutes of the second half, but over 11 minutes in the overtime periods.
DβMarco Dunn
Played a career-high 16 minutes, but only ~one minute of the overtime periods.
Seth Trimble / Dontrez Styles / Justin McKoy / Will Shaver
This crew played a combined ~11 minutes. Trimble and McKoy logged the phantom minutes in overtime. Shaver made his collegiate debut and scored his first points (two made free throws). Tyler Nickel did not play.
It was a wacky game with sloppy play and incoherent officiating that took almost three-and-half hours.
